New "Local Insights" Adds Niche Expertise to Crystal Cruises' Port Visits

New in 2012, carefully-selected curators, officials, and doyens are bringing an ultra-insider’s perspective to Crystal Cruises’ European port calls.  The exclusive program, called “Local Insights,” brings aboard native experts to share their unique, niche knowledge about the destination’s art, politics, archaeology or history.  Guests of all nationalities and interests can enjoy live, intimate talk show-style interviews (all complimentary) when Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity call in more than two dozen towns along the Mediterranean and Northern European coasts this year.  Programs will be rebroadcast on in-stateroom televisions during each luxury cruise.

Examples include:

  • Barcelona: Gaudí Centre architect Toshiaki Tange
  • St. Petersburg: Ex-Mayor of St. Petersburg, Vladimir Khodyrev, or Managing Director of the Hermitage, Olga Arkhipova
  • Belfast: Titanic expert Joe O’Neill
  • Copenhagen: Managing Director of Tivoli Gardens, Lars Liebst or the Mayor of Culture and Leisure Activities, Pia Allerslev
  • Bodrum: Archaeological diver and Director of the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology, Yasar Yildiz
  • Venice: Chairman of the 16-church-wide Chorus Association, Father Don Aldo Marangoni or Venetian Port Manager Roberto Perocchio

Additional ports where the program will be offered include  Dublin, Piraeus/Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, Reykjavik, Odessa, Kotor, Ashdod, Livorno, Malaga, Cadiz, Valencia, Sorrento, Dubrovnik, and Bilbao, with some itineraries offering experts at up to three different calls during the cruise.

“Our guests seek – and expect – profound travel experiences that allow them to explore the heart of destinations and see them in new ways,” says Bret Bullock, Crystal’s vice president of entertainment.  “This Crystal Visions Enrichment Program addition offers easy access to first-hand knowledge of cultures and regions using those who know these nuances best: the locals...and the most distinguished locals at that.”

With more overnights and time in port in 2012, Crystal is visiting dozens of culturally and historically significant destinations throughout Spain, Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Turkey, Russia, France, Israel, the Ukraine, the UK and more.  Until August 31, all-inclusive Book Now fares for 5- to 15-day European voyages sailing until December start at $1,310/person, with optional air add-ons and savings for groups of six or more, combining cruises, and Crystal Society member-sponsored, new-to-Crystal guests.

Crystal’s award-winning, luxurious offerings always include a diverse selection of thought-provoking, scholarly, and sophisticated enrichment activities that provide extensive on-board choices for cultured world travelers.

Crystal Cruises Voted World's Best for Record Seventeenth Year

Crystal Cruises has yet again claimed the crown as World’s Best Large-Ship Cruise Line in the annual Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards readers’ survey — making the win Crystal’s seventeenth consecutive triumph.  The ultra-luxury vacation company is the only cruise line, hotel, or resort to win its category every year since the awards began.

Crystal’s winning score for 2012 reflects thousands of jet-setting readers’ ratings across six areas: service, itineraries/destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and value.  The results are published in the renowned magazine’s August issue.

“While we have delighted travelers this year with newly designed spaces, new services, and new value-conscious pricing, we have offered a consistency of experience that is unmatched in our industry,” says Crystal President Gregg Michel.  “Travel + Leisure’s discerning readership clearly recognizes the best when they see it, and I couldn’t be prouder of our staff for their generous service, creativity and attention to detail.”

In recent months, Crystal has spent $40 million on stylish redesigns of its award-winning Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity, and $100 million in a little over five years.  Its Six-Star service, quality, and choices were also enhanced by introducing “All Inclusive” fine wines, premium spirits, and gratuities; partnering with renowned organizations like USC’s School of Cinematic Arts for a complimentary sophisticated filmmaking curriculum; crafting dozens of innovative, maiden port calls and itineraries, including more local overnights and shorter voyages; helping travelers get to and from ships more easily via Crystal’s new Fast Track Check-In and VIP Airport Services; and adding Bistro tapas and casual evening Chinese Comfort Food to a range of gourmet dinner options that includes Nobu Matsuhisa and Piero Selvaggio cuisines.  Local European entertainment and experts on board, Elton John and Diva-homage shows, Facebook and iPad classes, 360-day previews of shore excursions, and a new marketing campaign entitled “Begin a New Story” were also introduced to the Crystal landscape this year.

The Travel + Leisure 2012 World’s Best Award joins several other high-profile honors bestowed upon the luxury line since the end of 2011, including Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Service (Large-Ship); Condé Nast Traveler’s Best Mid-Sized Cruise Line (18th year), Cruise Ships (#1 and 2), and Spa; and ground-breaking design awards, including Hospitality Design magazine’s first-ever Distinctive Cruise Design award.

Additional itinerary highlights include maiden calls in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Albany, Australia; Ambodifotra and Taolagnaro, Madagascar; and Richards Bay, S. Africa (in addition to three other South African calls), and stops in Easter Island, Bora Bora, the Cook Islands, Wellington, Sydney, Melbourne, Reunion Island, Buenos Aires, Cartagena, Turks & Caicos, and more.  Full World Cruisers receive a host of complimentary perks such as private enrichment classes, fitness programs, entertainment, social invitations, and mementos.  The full itinerary will be posted on crystalcruises.com by July 16.

Crystal’s focus on stylish, comfortable design, most recently reinforced via $40 million extreme ship makeovers of Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony, combined with warm and friendly attentiveness, proffered by top-trained service staff from around the world, has earned the line a reputation for elevating hospitality to an art form.  With a host of complimentary amenities, from custom-crafted cocktails and included gratuities, to specialty restaurant dining, featuring the cuisine of Nobu Matsuhisa and Piero Selvaggio, and Creative Learning Institute partnerships with names such as USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, a Crystal cruise always offers tremendous value in luxury resort vacationing.  The line’s passion for taking care of guests in an inviting environment of extraordinary space, quality and choices has earned the company more “World’s Best” awards than any other cruise line, resort, or hotel in history.

Starting rates for the trans-Atlantic crossings begin at just $699 per person, double occupancy. For more information on Holland America Line’s fall Europe cruises, consult a professional travel seller.
