Celebrity Cruises Sweeps Wine Spectator Awards, Raises a Glass to Excellence

The exploration of wine, guided by knowledgeable sommeliers, is a hallmark of Celebrity Cruises' modern luxury vacation experience, and today, Celebrity is raising a glass to the spirit of excellence, having swept the Wine Spectator 2013 Restaurant Wine List Awards. In the first year that the magazine has included cruise lines in its awards, 10 Celebrity Cruises restaurants earned the prestigious publication's "Award of Excellence," which is for "lists that offer a well-chosen selection of quality producers, along with a thematic match to the menu in both price and style." Each of the carefully curated lists in the main restaurants on ten of Celebrity's ships won the award.

"We're thrilled to be one of the first cruise lines to ever be considered in this way by Wine Spectator," said Chanelle Duarte, CSW, Celebrity's manager of beverage development. "The same commitment to innovation and authentic guest experiences that drives all of our onboard offerings was at the heart of our approach to creating the winning lists, and it's rewarding to be recognized by such a legendary, highly respected mainstay in the industry as Wine Spectator."

"We opened our wine list awards to cruise ships because we recognize the industry's efforts to offer quality wine programs onboard," said Nathan Wesley, Senior Editor, Wine Spectator. "While the award is conferred for a ship's main dining room, we're also excited to see wine play an important role throughout the ship, and in some cases, be featured in special events and tastings at sea. So, whether by land or by sea, we're thrilled to point our readers towards great wine destinations."

On average, Celebrity's main restaurants have over 400 wines available, presented as an extensive global collection of fine wines carefully selected to match both the modern luxury brand's globally influenced blend of classic and contemporary cuisine and its diverse portfolio of unique destinations around the world. Celebrity's onboard specialty restaurants also each have their own unique wine lists, created with the style of the cuisine in mind.

Designed to please everyone from the novice wine drinker to the most ardent enthusiast, Celebrity's main restaurant wine lists are presented in a progressive format, where the wines are grouped by unique flavor profiles. In building the list, each wine was carefully reviewed by Celebrity's team of wine professionals and rated based on its unique characteristics. Categories contain wines with similar flavor profiles to help better define a wine in terms of what matters most, its taste. Wines are listed in sequence, starting with wines that are mild to wines that are more powerful, ending with wines on the sweeter side. Wine-savvy guests enjoy more technical language and descriptors included in the list, and guests who are still learning about wine have an opportunity to become more educated and comfortable with the topic.

Celebrity Cruises' team of expertly trained sommeliers prides itself on enhancing guests' wine experience. Each sommelier goes through extensive trainings on wine fundamentals, including viticulture, wine making and food and wine pairing; regional knowledge, wine laws and regional terrior; tasting skills; storytelling, which helps sommeliers bring wines to life by painting a picture of its producer, grape varietal, region or even the origin of its label; and future trends.

Celebrity offers a variety of onboard activities and experiences aimed at immersing guests in wine education and enjoyment. These include Riedel comparative wine glass workshops, wine and food pairing events, wine tastings and more.

Wine Spectator has honored the world's best wine lists since 1981. The Award of Excellence recognizes a wine list offering an interesting and diverse selection of 100 or more wines that are well-presented and thematically match the restaurant's cuisine in both price and style.

Celebrity Cruises won 10 of the 11 Wine Spectator awards given to a cruise line in 2013.

All Land+Sea Journeys combine a three- to seven-night Holland America Line cruise with an overland adventure that includes a one-, two- or three-night stay at Denali National Park as a centerpiece of the Alaska experience.

Many Land+Sea Journeys go off the beaten path and showcase places such as Dawson City in the heart of gold rush country, charming Seward, the five-star Alyeska Resort, pristine Kluane and Tombstone Parks, colorful Skagway and the historic narrow-gauge White Pass and Yukon Route railroad.

U.S. Justice Department Blocks American Airlines, US Airways Merger

In a move very few analysts predicted, the U.S. Justice Department has filed an antitrust lawsuit to block the planned mega-merger of U.S. Airways with American Airlines.

In its filing in the District of Columbia, on Tuesday, August 13, the Justice Department said:

“Millions of passengers depend on the airline industry to travel quickly, efficiently, and safely between various cities in the United States and throughout the world. Since 1978, the nation has relied on competition among airlines to promote affordability, innovation, and service and quality improvements.

"In recent years, however, the major airlines have, in tandem, raised fares, imposed new and higher fees, and reduced service. Competition has diminished and consumers have paid a heavy price.

"This merger—by creating the world’s largest airline— would, in the words of US Airways’ management, “finish[ ] industry evolution.” It would reduce the number of major domestic airlines from five to four, and the number of “legacy” airlines—today, Delta, United, American, and US Airways—from four to three. In so doing, it threatens substantial harm to consumers.

"Because of the size of the airline industry, if this merger were approved, even a small increase in the price of airline tickets, checked bags, or flight change fees would cause hundreds of millions of dollars of harm to American consumers annually."

In expecting an easy approval, experts pointed to the mergers of other major carriers--Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines in 2008, United Airlines and Continental Airlines in 2010 and Southwest Airlines and AirTran Airways in 2011--as reasons for a likely OK. The EU had also just approved the merger based on the new merged airline giving up slots on the Philadelphia to Heathrow route. As would be expected, American and US Airways issued a joint statement saying that it would mount a "vigorous defense" of the merger.

“We believe that the DOJ is wrong in its assessment of our merger. Integrating the complementary networks of American and US Airways to benefit passengers is the motivation for bringing these airlines together. Blocking this procompetitive merger will deny customers access to a broader airline network that gives them more choices," the airlines said in a statement released on August 13.

“Further, this merger provides the best outcome for AMR’s restructuring. The widespread support from the employees and financial stakeholders of both airlines underscores the fact that this is the best path forward for both airlines and the customers and communities we serve," the airlines' said.

American and US Airways promised to "pursue all legal options in order to achieve this merger and deliver the benefits of the new American to our customers and communities as soon as possible.”

Some industry experts are now saying that the move might be a ploy to wrest some slot concessions from the airlines prior to approval.  On August 15, U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Sean Lane is expected to hear the case for American Airline’s reorganization plan.  The merger and a $19.9 million dollar payout to departing CEO Tom Horton were major cornerstones of that plan.

Norwegian Buys 75 Acres in Belize for $50 Million Cruise Destination

norwegian-cruise-line-gem

Norwegian Cruise Line is planning to build a $50 million cruise destination on two adjoining islands in southern Belize. The master plan is still under development, but the company said the project will likely include a floating pier, an island village with open-air structures on raised platforms, a marina, a transportation hub for tours, a lagoon for water sports and a beach area. The development will be designed to be environmentally friendly and promote the nature, art, adventure and music of Belizean, Mayan and Garifuna history and culture, the company said.

The 75-acre parcel, called Harvest Caye, was previously was earmarked for a resort development with an air strip. Norwegian first considered building on Crawl Caye, a small island also near Belize’s Placencia peninsula, but that plan was rejected by the government, which then worked with the cruise line to find the new location. Norwegian confirmed the Harvest Caye land purchase and plans on Aug. 14.

“As our fleet continues to grow to 15 ships by 2017, we expect that we will double the number of guests sailing on our Western Caribbean itineraries and, once this new destination is complete, bring four times as many guests to Belize than we do today,” said Norwegian President and CEO Kevin Sheehan.

Norwegian retained IDEA Inc. of Orlando to design the destination and oversee the project. IDEA is a designer of branded ports of call and destinations and has worked with private developers, government ministries, and independent agencies to create branded destinations in Alaska, Florida, St. Lucia, St. Maarten, Mexico, St. Kitts, Honduras, Bahamas and Jamaica.

Norwegian has signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Belize that calls for adherence to environmental standards and job creation for Belizeans. The new destination is expected to create up to 1,000 jobs.

Belize Prime Minister Dean Barrow has said that Belize needs to decentralize cruise tourism in an effort to reduce overcrowding, so the new destination will help relieve tourism pressures in Belize City. However, the project is facing some local opposition. The Belize Tourism Industry Association is against establishing a major cruise port in southern Belize because it could damage the environment in an area that “should remain an eco-friendly low-impact destination,” according to an Aug. 7 press release.

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines returns to the Caribbean

Fred Olsen Cruise Lines returns to the Caribbean

Back by popular demand, guests can now take a Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines’ Caribbean fly-cruise in January 2015! With the fun and excitement of the Christmas and New Year celebrations all over, guests will have the opportunity to escape the cold British winter on a Fred. Olsen 14-night sunshine cruise, taking in the stunning Caribbean Islands, aboard 929-guest cruise ship Braemar. Flying from London Gatwick or Manchester and departing from Barbados on 12th January 2015, this exotic cruise is predicted to be one of Fred. Olsen’s most popular voyages, with a general on sale date of Saturday 17th August 2013.

One unusual feature of Fred. Olsen’s most modern ship, Braemar, is the promenade deck – a complete wrap-around deck ideal for a gentle stroll in the evening sun, making it an excellent choice for warmer cruising.

Nathan Philpot, Sales and Marketing Director for Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, said:

“We have been inundated with requests to return to the Caribbean and we are very excited to be able to offer our loyal cruise guests the opportunity to enjoy the beauty and charm of the Caribbean Islands once again, on board Braemar, the ideal ship for relaxed, sunshine cruising.

“New customers can book from Saturday 17th August 2013, but due to the high demand that we expect for this cruise, priority is being given to previous Fred. Olsen guests, who can book before this date.”

This is the first time, since 2012, that Fred. Olsen has offered a Caribbean fly-cruise option. Fred. Olsen had operated a winter fly-cruise programme, based in Barbados, from 2001 to 2012, but this was concluded to extend the wide choice of ex-UK departure ports, giving greater convenience to guests from all over the British Isles, as well as allowing those loyal Braemar fans to cruise on the ship all-year-round from the UK. However, Fred. Olsen has listened to guests’ feedback and brought back this very popular cruise itinerary on board Braemar.
