Norwegian Cruise Line's eight-year-old Norwegian Dawn is in dry dock this week undergoing an extensive renovation.
The 2,224-passenger vessel is getting more than 50 new cabins as well as a new Brazilian steakhouse similar to the one that debuted last year on the Norwegian Epic. Changes will also be to the location of the Spinnaker Lounge, Blue Lagoon restaurant, gift shop, art gallery and photo gallery.
The new cabins include, four Deluxe Owner's Suites ranging from 667 to 732 square feet. Also new are 14 Family Suites that sleep up to six passengers; 10 Family Suites with balcony that mostly sleep up to six passengers; and 18 inside cabins.
All passenger cabins, as well as crew cabins, also are getting upgraded flat screen televisions, the line adds, and the ship's Dawn Club Casino is getting a top-to-bottom overhaul, as are the Kid's Crew and Teen Club areas.
The ship's makeover also will bring aesthetic improvements in the Fitness area and Garden Café; and a refreshing of the Atrium Lobby with new furniture in Java Café. Overall, the makeover is similar to one undertaken last year for the Norwegian Star.
Technical modifications in the works include the replacement of one engine; application of a new hull coating; and an upgrade to the hot temperature regulation the line says will reduce energy consumption.
The Norwegian Dawn will re-enter service on Friday in Boston -- a new seasonal home port for the vessel. The ship will sail seven-day Bermuda voyages out of the city every Friday through Oct. 21 and then reposition to Miami for a series of 10- and 11-day Southern Caribbean trips through April 8, 2012.
