Prince Edward Island welcomed its first cruise ship of the year
Published Monday, May 2nd 2011Prince Edward Island welcomed its first cruise ship of the year today, launching what is expected to be another banner season.
Holland America Line’s ms Maasdam with, carrying more than 1,200 visitors and 550 crew members, arrived at the Port of Charlottetown this morning.
Prince Edward Island is increasingly becoming known as a top cruise destination.
The cruise industry has experienced considerable growth in Prince Edward Island. In 2010, 92,000 visitors and crew arrived in Charlottetown – a 7.2 per cent increase over the previous year. This year that number is expected to increase to more than 105,000.
The Islanders welcome cruise ship visitors to the province this season. Visitors can tour the province, taking in the sightseeing, shopping and dining and the warm hospitality will be on display.
There are five ships planning their inaugural visit to Prince Edward Island this year: the Caribbean Princess, the Crown Princess, the Prince Albert II, the Regatta and M/S Navigator. The Caribbean Princess will be the largest ship visiting in 2011 with an expected 3,633 passengers. It will make three visits to Prince Edward Island this summer.
