Royal Caribbean may have cruise stop at El Salvador

El Salvador's tourism minister is saying negotiations with Royal Caribbean Cruise Line are well underway.
"We are very close to achieving the first cruise route to El Salvador in history through the arrival of Royal Caribbean," says tourism minister Jose Napoleon Duarte.
The first Royal Caribbean ship visits to El Salvador could take place in 2012.
Cruise calls in El Salvador are a relatively rarity, although El Salvador's El Mundo newspaper notes that a Hapag-Lloyd ship, Europa, visited the country in April. A Fred Olsen Cruise Lines ship, Balmoral, also is scheduled to visit El Salvador in the coming year.
Tucked between Guatemala and Honduras, the tiny Central American nation has become famous for its surfing beaches and also is home to Mayan ruins and eco-tourism sites such as the Montecristo Cloud Forest.
El Mundo also says El Salvador's tourism ministry is looking into the construction of a new cruise port through a public-private partnership. Cruise ships visiting El Salvador currently use the port of Acajutla.
