U.S. Department of State Issues Haiti Travel Warning
Published Thursday, August 15th 2013The U.S. Department of State issued a Travel Warning to inform U.S. travelers about security in Haiti. The advisory warns citizens to “exercise caution” when traveling to the country due to crime, lack of infrastructure, particularly in medical facilities, seasonal inclement weather and limited police protection.
Noting that “hundreds of thousands of U.S. citizens safely visit Haiti each year,” the advisory nevertheless warns that “the poor state of Haiti’s emergency response network should be carefully considered” and advises travelers to “use organizations that have solid infrastructure, evacuation, and medical support options in place.”
The advisory recommends U.S. citizens have their host organization meet them at the airport upon arrival and establish pre-arranged airport and hotel transfers. The Department advised U.S. citizens choosing to travel to Haiti to review the agency’s country-specific information page.
